Nutrition Plan - Multisport - Paul Romero

2079   1762

Paul Romero Standup Paddle boardingMultisport athlete extraordinaire - Paul Romero- has traveled the world competing in some of the most grueling events. He talks about his nutrition plan and how he found out he was lactose intolerant in this Q&A.

Do you have a health condition or allergy (ex: gluten intolerance) that requires you to have a special nutrition plan?
I'm lactose intolerant and that sucks but, now that I know I am,  it all works out well at this point. I had a few rough years until I figured it out.

Do you follow a specific diet (ex: vegetarian, paleolithic etc…). If so, describe it and explain how is it benefiting you?
I follow an 80% paleolithic diet and find it very beneficial for a number of reasons. It leaned me out significantly and quickly. I'm the leanest ever in my life and have zero intestinal issues, ever. It's amazing the bloating/distention we get used to and think nothing of it. I'm not sure paleo is 100% perfect, but it sure feels good.

Do you supplement daily with nutrients like vitamins, minerals, omega fatty acids, amino acids etc…?
Oh hell yes. Got to. I go hard day in/day out. Sometimes sleep is a luxury and weather/climate conditions I put myself through tests my immune system to the max. So, I take:

- Amino Acids including BCAA's
- Omega Fatty Acids including Omega 3's from Stronger Faster Healthier (SFH)
- SportMulti vitamin and mineral supplement for athletes [FTM: see our Essentials Nutrients category to understand the importance of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and omega fatty acids]
- MDrive Joint and Tissue Rejuvanator for bone and joint health [FTM: see our Joint Health category]
- AstaFactor which contains astaxanthin, one of the most powerful natural antioxidant

Those are the basics supplements I take daily.

In addition to the above fundamental supplements, I'm really switched onto MDrive Elite. It's a very effective product for both men and women, and for endurance athletes in general. Based around the Cordycep mushroom from Tibet, which I've used for many years, it increases my top end Cardio significantly. I keep being astounded as to what it does.Combined with the amazing KSM-66 Ashwaganda which provides all sorts of magic, this blend moves the needle and promptly. Then it has these other extracts that naturally increase testosterone, like Funegreek Extract and others. This product is a must have for any athlete.

What’s your pre-workout/competition nutrition and hydration plan?
Pre Endurance and Pre Strength, I'm going with CORE from Proven Nutrition. If I'm lifting or doing CrossFit, I'll add in Proven Nutrition's CITRALLINE, BETA, and CREA-HCL. This blend provides an incredible boost, clean and reliable.

Additionally, I use Mdrive ATP Energy. It's an extremely effective formula for the power AND Endurance Athlete. A mixture of ATP, Cordyceps, Maca, Guarana....have all been blended together to give an extremely effective and smooth surge of energy that is noticeable in a workout. Going for 1 rep max in Deadlift, or charging some steeps on the bike....this formula IS NOTICEABLE. Haven't  seen a formula that has virtually 100% positive response from every athlete, in EVERY use. It's that effective, and safe and CLEAN.

What’s your during workout/competition nutrition and hydration plan?
During, I like to use the incredible reliable and consistent formula, CORE which is low glycemic and anti-inflammatory. It has been tested time and again in Ulta events as well as day to day living and travel. Simply the best formula on the market.

For anything over 2 hrs, I go straight to Hammer's Perpeteum (Cafe Latte), and SFH's Fuel with coconut fat which is a pretty cool low glycemic product that would rock your world. And, I always take Sportlegs, 24oz of clear water, and an electrolyte like Nuun every hour. I also take 10grams of Omega-3 from SFH every 4-6 hours.

What’s your post-workout/competition nutrition and hydration plan?
I like to take both plant base and whey base protein products. For the plant base, I take Hammer Nutrition's Vegan Protein which uses USDA Organic ingredients including a protein blend made of pea, pumpkin, sacha inchi, chlorella, and spirullina protein. As for the whey product, I take SFH Recovery which is fortified with glutamine as well as other recovery nutrients. I switch on a daily basis between the 2 products. I also take Omega 3 Fish Oil from SFH, AstaFactor, Epson Salt bath, and do ice compression.

And, I take magnesium - the king of earth minerals on which your body thrives on – every night. Sadly, our food sources these days cannot keep up with our body’s needs (especially as hard charging athletes) but, fortunately, there are good and affordable supplement sources available. I recommend to take magnesium Bisglycinate or a complex, highly bio-available form that does not usually cause stomach and gastro intestinal discomfort that is often associated with other forms of magnesium. My go to is Essential MG from Hammer Nutrition. Studies show that a dose of 400-800mg - for athletes – works best. I take it in warm water before bed and wake-up feeling refreshed and recovered.

Do you compete in different types of events (ex: different distances or formats)? If so, is your nutrition/hydration plan different for each event?
I keep it pretty consistent with most all events. In extreme heat, I take more water and electrolytes but, otherwise, the same plan applies all the way around. Seems to work.

Any other nutrition/hydration secrets you’d like to share?
I've divulged pretty much most of the plan. I can't give away all my secrets. That wouldn't be very smart now would it.
